Cheese Spread

Cheese spreads can be cream cheese or processed cheese based. Made either from a single type of cheese or a blend of several, they can also contain varying quantities of butter, milk powder, emulsifying salts, water and seasonings.

Cheese spreads have several technical advantages over traditional cheeses including a longer shelf-life, a uniform look and physical appearance and a resistance to separation when cooked (they melt easily when baked or grilled) thanks to the emulsifying salts.

Cheese spreads can be eaten hot or cold at any time of the day: on bread or crackers, as a dip or in sauces. In the United Kingdom, they are typically sold in individual foil-wrapped portions, in plastic jars or tubs, or as individual slice which are typically used on top of burgers and toasties.
