The Lactalis story in the UK started in London in 1988 with the acquisition of a small importer and packer of specialty cheeses: David Brough Gourmet Foods.
Lactalis in the UK became part of a network of commercial subsidiaries created to develop sales for the products and brands outside its core French market.
Lactalis purchased A. McLelland and Son Limited; a Scottish based cheese manufacturer with a factory in Stranraer, included Caledonian Cheese Company Seriously® Strong brand. This acquisition included a shareholding in the Orkney Cheese Company and Dairy Solutions.
A joint venture was created between the Lactalis Group and Nestle, covering 9 European countries, and Lactalis Nestle Chilled Dairy was established in the UK. This newly formed business has a well-known portfolio of yogurts including Ski®, the first yogurt launched in the UK in 1965, and Munch Bunch®.
Lubborn Cheese Limited was integrated into the Lactalis Group and has since become the largest producer of soft cheese in the UK, including Brie and Goats Cheese.
Lactalis acquired Rachel's Dairy Limited, the number two brand in the UK for organic yogurts. Rachel's became fully integrated into the Group in 2012 and kept their manufacturing facility based in Aberystwyth, on the mid-Wales coast.
The Lactalis UK corporate office is based in Redhill, Surrey, where the commercial and support operations for both Lactalis and Lactalis Nestle Chilled Dairy work closely together.
